Lucerne, Switzerland… A Springboard to the Swiss Alps

I’m 75 and have never seen the Alps !!! I LOVE mountains, and have been to the Rockies, Sierra, Himalayas, and the Andes. Finally one of my daughters suggested that we two plan a trip to Central Europe, and found a really attractive option of traveling through Switzerland entirely by train. My younger daughter, upon heating of this plan, said “a father – daughter trip … I’m in.” Which prompted Mrs. Bear to say that three is an odd number which she evened out by also coming. The end result was that, a year later, we met up in Lucerne, Switzerland to begin our first ”family only” trip in 35 years … no In Laws, grandchildren, or extended family.

Lucerne is a 90 minute train ride from Zurich in central, Germanic Switzerland. It is known as a springboard to the higher mountains which surround a lovely lake. It is a very popular destination and a great orientation to the Alps. Here was my first mountain sighting:

And here is where we are ascending tomorrow:

In our acclimation day, we walked around Lucerne, crossed its attractive bridges, and took a lake cruise to a cog railway that deposited us above the lake, looking down at the beginnings of the high meadows.

Here is a photo of our Bear Cubs:

We found a very nice Tavern to sample the local beer, cheese, and sausages, and then retraced our route back to Lucerne at sunset.

A great start to a hopefully memorable trip !!!
